Optimizing Google Adsense

Custom Search

If you have been serving Google Adsense ads on your website's for a while, or is getting ready to do it, you are probably wondering how you can benefit the most from Google's Adsense program....

It is no secret that there is big bucks in writing e-books, courses and creating products geared around Google's Adsense program. Many of these products are sold for several hundred dollars, claiming that they will show you "the hidden secrets" to Adsense success.

Some of the Adsense products and Adsense books offered does actually offer you value for your money, but there are also many scam artists operating in this business.

Let us tell you the biggest secret to Google's Adsense program "There are NO secrets!".

Now, how can we claim this?

By using pure logic, it is obvious that everyone is bound by the same terms and conditions for using Google's Adsense program, which again means that the only party that is in full control is Google.

With that being said, there are several things you can do to optimize your Adsense earnings, also without being in danger of violating Google's Adsense Terms.

1. Select the Google Adsense Ad type that fits your design best - and gives the best CTR.

Through several months of research, both by us and other Adsense users, it has been concluded that the 2 best general performing ad types are:

  • Skyscraper 160x600 with text ads.
  • Placement: Left or Right side

  • Big Rectangle 336 x280 with text ads.
  • Placement: Top or Middle

2. Select a Colour scheme that fits the design of your pages.

This is a much discussed part about optimizing Adsense income, and the opinions does vary.

However, our recommendations is that you select one of the following Colour schemes.

2.1 Colour scheme that matches your website

If you look to the top of this text, you will see that the Google Adsense ads are served on a white background (the same as the page background), without any borders, and with a font and link colour that matches the rest of the site. This is what is called a "non-intrusive" Adsense ad colour scheme, because it doesn't scream at the website visitor, and is therefore considered a part of the site, instead of a disturbance to the eye.

2.2 Use a random colour scheme (secret revealed!)

By using the techniques discussed in Adsense Tips, you can have Google serve Adsense ads on your website, and dynamically switch between 4 different colour schemes. This is actually one of the much overlooked features of the Adsense program, and by some referred to as a "big secret"...

3 . Do SEO (search engine optimization) on your website.

Google doesn't reveal how it's Googlebot determines what type of ad's to show on your website.

But if you follow these guidelines, it is our experience that Google does serve highly relevant Adsense ads, and additionally your websites will get well indexed by search engine robots.

  • Use a METATITLE, that defines what each page is about.
  • Use METATAGS, to define the keywords that match your page content.
  • If possible, register a domain name that has your top keyword in it.
  • On the first line of the page, give a descriptive title of your page in
  • Try to avoid using top navigation, use left navigation instead.
  • Always create a robots.txt file.
  • Remember to create a sitemap file.
  • Do a search on Google for "SEO" and gather more information.

4. Optimize your website for high paying Adsense keywords.

This is where you can make a big difference on your Adsense income. As mentioned earlier on this website, Google Adsense clicks varies from $0.00 and up to several dollars a click. The trick in optimizing your pages with high paying keywords, without breaking Google's Adsense terms, or damaging your site's content, is to do a bit of research and abstract thinking..

You will never be able to know the exact price a click on a given keywords gives you, this is a well guarded "Google secret". However, you can use 2 different legal and freely available tools, to get a better estimate on each keyword.

If you signup to Googles Adwords program, you will get access to different tools - including Google's AdWords TrafficEstimatorSandbox.

Here you can get an estimated cost to AdWords advertisers for a given keyword, and test out different keywords. You can use Google's AdWords keyword suggestion tool to have variations of your keywords suggested.

Let's assume that you have created a website about Horses, and you have decided to expand your site with more content.

A search with the above mentioned method shows the following price per keyword :

  • Horses $0,33
  • Model Horses $1,34
  • wooden rocking horses $1,11
  • Arabian Horses for sale $0,98
  • thoroughbred horses $0,66

So just out these examples, you might want to consider writing your next page about Arabian Horses for sale, or maybe even add a page about Model Horses, or wooden rocking horses for your readers children.

This method is also very useful when trying to determine if there are higher paying keywords, that you can target with the same content. From your readers perspective you are still offering content on the same subject, and for the Google AdWords advertisers, you are offering original content about their subject, and therefore highly targeted prospective buyers.

Please, always remember to write your content for your readers not for Adsense, since this can result in having your Adsense account terminated, and all your earnings will be lost.

5. Increase website traffic

Up to now, we have been discussing means of improving your CTR and click prices. Another factor, that is easy overlooked is your websites traffic.

Always try and increase your site traffic, i.e. by offering free valuable content, hold contests, offer newsletters, contribute to forums that are relevant to your topic etc.

6. Use Google Adsense Adlinks on your site.

This new type of Google Adsense Ads, have a different layout and function that the usual Adsense ads. When you add Adsense Adlinks to your WebPages (you can add both Adsense ads, Adsense search and Adsense Adlinks to the same page), your visitors will be presented with 4-5 links. Each link represent what google determines to be the most relevant keyword for your site, and when clicked on, your visitor is taken to a page displaying relevant Adsense ads to the link clicked on. Once again, any clicks registered on this page counts towards your Adsense income.

7. Use Google Adsense site search.

The Google Adsense Search is a much overlooked feature of the Adsense program.

When you register at the the Adsense program, you can choose to serve content bases ads, but also you can select to join Adsense Search.

What Adsense search does is that it gives you the option to place a "Google Search" field on your website, similar to the one below. You can define the look of the search field from within your publisher center, and choose where to display the Google logo, submit button, colours etc.

It is possible for you to "brand" your search result page, by defining the colours used, and even include a logo (50 x 50 px).

A great feature about the Google Adsense Search fields is that you can choose to have the results displayed on a new page, and thereby keeping the visitor on your site.

You can then choose from 2 different types of search :

  • Google Adsense Search
  • Google Adsense Site Search

Google Adsense search directs your visitor to a page containing both Adsense ads and search results from Google. This is the type of search listed on the bottom of the navigation bar on this page.

The second type of search, Google Adsense Site Search, searches all recorded pages from your site that is listed in Google's database. It then shows the user a result page, containing pages from your site that matches the search criteria, as well as search relevant Adsense Ads.

You can track the performance of your search fields, by creating a tracker from your Adsense Publisher center. Any clicks made from the result pages, counts towards your Adsense income.
